New Zealand Lightning Detection Network moves to MetService ownership
After 26 years of partnership and product development with Transpower New Zealand, we are pleased to announce that the New Zealand Lightning Detection Network (NZLDN) will transfer to full MetService ownership and continue to provide trusted lightning data to customers across New Zealand.
Since helping design and install the network in 1999, MetService has supported Transpower by managing the network, carrying out maintenance and upgrades, and operating the real-time service that supports both weather forecasting and electricity network operations.
Lightning is a major hazard during severe thunderstorms. The NZLDN provides real-time lightning information that helps MetService forecasters track and monitor thunderstorms, support severe weather warnings, and deliver weather services that support aviation, energy operators, and public safety.
As New Zealand's national provider of severe weather warnings, MetService relies on a strong observation network to monitor weather and keep people informed and safe. Bringing the NZLDN into MetService strengthens that network with real-time lightning data, enhancing our ability to track thunderstorms and their impacts. Transpower will continue to receive the lightning data they rely on as a valued long-term customer.
We thank Transpower for a long and productive partnership and look forward to continuing to deliver reliable lightning data and insights for the benefit of New Zealand.
