Supporting Tokelau’s Meteorological Capability
This year marks the beginning of a new three-year MFAT funded partnership to support the Government of Tokelau in strengthening its meteorological services – building on our previous work with Tokelau.
Delivering fundamental weather observations training for the local met office staff and those involved in disaster management will be key area of focus. Training of local technicians to enable the ongoing maintenance of observation equipment such as Automatic Weather Stations is also part of our sustainable approach. 🌱
Emma Coombe and Dexter Ricario travelled onboard HMNZS Canterbury to reach the three atolls (Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo), where they met the local meteorological staff to hear from them about their needs - an important first step in shaping the support programme.
Over the next three years, MetService trainers and engineers will travel to Tokelau to provide hands on training and technical support, complemented by continued remote assistance.
A heartfelt thank you to EDNRE, the local Met Office and MiCore staff for facilitating this visit and partnering so collaboratively. We’re also grateful to the New Zealand Defence Force for the logistics support that made it possible to travel onboard HMNZS Canterbury to reach the atolls.
We look forward to supporting Tokelau over the coming years to help strengthen their weather resilience. 💪🌦️
