Forecasting for the big screen

Last year MetService played a behind-the-scenes role in Tenzing, the film telling the story of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary’s historic first ascent of Mount Everest.

During filming, our Meteorological Consult team provided specialised forecasting support for remote South Island locations, helping the production crew navigate some of New Zealand’s most challenging and changeable alpine weather. Working around locations including Aoraki/Mt Cook and the Tasman Glacier, accurate weather intelligence helped inform critical decisions and supported safe, efficient filming in demanding winter conditions.

The production team praised the reliability of the forecasts, with weather support helping keep filming on track and avoiding weather-related delays. It's a great example of how MetService expertise supports industries well beyond day-to-day weather forecasting, helping people make informed decisions in complex environments.

Excitingly Tenzing will be available to stream on Apple TV+ from 16 October. Congratulations to everyone involved in supporting this unique project.
