MetService Hosts International PHORS Meeting
Global cryosphere experts gathered in Wellington last month, and MetService was proud to host them.
From 10–13 February, we welcomed members of the WMO Panel on Polar and High‑mountain Observations, Research and Services (PHORS) for their annual meeting at Victoria University of Wellington's Rutherford House.
The 20 delegates enjoyed stunning views over Wellington harbour as they met to discuss the rapidly changing cryosphere - the snow, ice, glaciers, permafrost and frozen ground that are shifting as the climate warms.
These changes have major implications for sea‑level, ecosystems, and weather patterns worldwide. PHORS plays a key role in guiding global strategy, advocacy, and engagement on these issues for the WMO and its Member countries.
Across four days, discussions focused on:
The need for high‑quality cryosphere observations and data sharing
Advancing tipping‑point science to support decision‑makers
Strengthening cryosphere early warning and hazard services
Contributing to the Fifth International Polar Year 2032-2033
Bringing global experts together in Aotearoa strengthens international collaboration and the science that underpins the services New Zealanders rely on every day.
