MetService serves as New Zealand’s single, authoritative voice for weather information - a particularly vital resposibility during severe weather events when message clarity supports public safety.

We collaborate closely with media partners – radio, TV, online, and print – to deliver timely, accurate and accessible weather updates nationwide. This includes facilitating interviews and new stories, providing commentary, and giving real-time briefings – from daily updates through to critical severe weather guidance.

Our media team bridges the gap between the forecast room and outside media, delivering authoritative weather information to Kiwis - whenever and wherever they need it.

How we help:

  • In-house Content Videos

    We produce compelling weather content videos – including daily updates, severe weather forecasts, and rural outlooks – to deliver accurate weather information in a clear, accessible manner.

    Our video content is available via our own channels and through our partners. This multi-channel, widespread approach strengthens our authority, supports message clarity, and enhances information availability.

  • Media Partnership and On-Air Collaboration

    Our relationships with key media organisations - like NZME, Stuff.co.nz, 3 News, RNZ, TVNZ, and Mediaworks - ensure Kiwis can access weather content whenever and wherever they need it.

    Our media contributions range from regular broadcasted desk chat segments, through to live commentary during weather events.

  • Scripting and Clips

    We provide high-quality, scientifically grounded scripts and clips to support broadcasters’ own weather segments, offering the information and/or guidance needed to deliver an accurate and engaging weather broadcast.

    In addtion, we offer APIs, datasets, visual assets, and graphics to media partners to support message clarity.

  • Media Support

    MetService is the official source for Severe Weather Watches and Warnings, working closely with NEMA to ensure public safety.

    Our media communications team is on-call daily from 7am–3pm to provide urgent updates or meteorologist-backed advice for interviews and news stories. These hours are extended during major weather events. Outside of hours, the media line is answered 24/7 by our meteorologists.

  • Weather News Media Releases

    We produce and circulate regular Weather News media releases, covering the latest updates and details on current and incoming weather conditions around NZ.
