MetService is able provide official information on historical weather events. Our services including reports from an extensive network of weather station, lightning strike reports, satellite and radar imagery, and an archive of written forecasts.
These reports are prepared and verified by our forensic meteorologist and are often useful for insurance claims, health safety reporting, property damage investigations, and other weather-related incidents or disputes.
Weather Station Reports
Verified evidence of the weather conditions on a given day. With access to 900 rain gauges and 400 wind hourly observations across the New Zealand, reports are often available close to the location of interest.
Available fields vary by station but can include wind direction, wind speed, wind gusts, visibility, clouds, temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall.
Observations can be provided as daily, hourly, and where possible one-minute frequency (at 200 sites).
Long time series of observations are available, with records dating back to 1993 at many locations.
Bespoke climatological parameters be created on request.
Prices start from $120+GST for a few days of hourly observations. For longer time series (several months or more) or one-minute observations, prices start from $375+GST.
Lightning Reports
Lightning reports provide historical lightning data including precise lighting stroke locations and details for any area in New Zealand. The reports are accurate and often used for insurance claims, health and safety reporting, property damage investigations
Search period: the day of the event, or longer as necessary
Search radius: 50km from the given location, or larger as necessary
Option to include/exclude cloud-to-cloud strikes
Results provided as an interactive map.
A list of strikes is provided and their distance from the given location.
Prices start from $375+GST.

Historical written forecasts and severe warnings are available for purchase on request. The starting price for this service is $120+GST
Wind rose - a representation the frequency of wind speed and direction for a given station. A single wind rose is $565+GST
Satellite and radar imagery
Our Forensic Meteorologist can provide a detailed report describing the likely weather conditions at given date and location. Such a report typically includes a description of the overall weather and the supporting meteorological evidence such as satellite, radar and weather observations. Reports of this nature cost upwards of $5000+GST depending on the complexity of the analysis required.
Alternative Publicly Available Sources
Daily summaries of many of our weather stations may be found in the National Climate Database which is maintained by Earth Sciences New Zealand. You will need to register to use this site, but there is no charge to do so.
Regional councils (including the Auckland City Council) also maintain their own rain gauge network. This data is normally available on the respective website as ‘Environmental Data’.
